It is true that the USA is one of the most obese countries in the world and the bad news? We are getting fatter! You can see the difference in kids today from past years. I for one, grew up in the 60’s. We played baseball from morning till evening in Illinois where the sun sets late. We would be out there in the morning and go home for lunch, come back and play till dinner, go back and play till sunset. The back of my legs were blistered with the hot sun but as i remember, we were all thin. When football season started, we would get together in a local park and play for a few hours after school. Same with basketball as the kid up the street had a nice half court basketball court. We played for hours and hours and the effects of that were slim, slender kids who had a zest for sports and the sports of course kept all of us in shape. Times of course change like the seasons and today’s technology have made couch potatoes out of most kids. You can see the problems as i teach kids who are very over weight. mac and cheese dinners, social media and cell phone computers have all added to the problem of our over weight society. “There’s an epidemic of obesity going on out there” said one pediatrician. The measure of being over weight is a body mass index between the 85th and 95th percentile In turn, obesity problems can cause health concerns. Diabetes, high levels of HDL’s, hypertension, hyperglycemia and a risk of more asthmatic problems. Further, studies have shown that obese kids have a higher number of visits to the dentist. Obesity can also contribute to significant emotional problems and psychological problems for children. Moreover, kids that are obese have problems in physical tasks. Obesity without question , is a result of lack of physical activity coupled by poor dietary choices. With this in mind, get your kids in some sort of 30 minute three times a week cardio. Limit “bad” snacks to only once a day. Try introducing more fruits and vegetables as well as staying away from sugary drinks. A nice addition is green tea or chocolate milk which has great potential after workouts . With good healthy choices, getting kids away from the cell phone, and physical activity, we can get our kids back to the health we all enjoyed as kids during the 60’s. It’s our responsibility as parents to make sure a generation of obesity is corrected.
