Over the past decades, every imaginable device has come to the forefront as far as exercise and nutrition drinks cryotherapy may seem like a new one but, the origins of these cold plunge baths date back as far as the ancient Greeks and Romans. Back then cold immersions were used to stimulate blood circulation and rapidly cool the body. Henceforth, water temperatures ranged from 4 to 8 degrees.                                                     What exactly is cryotherapy you may ask.It is the immersion into ice cold water usually ice that promotes both stimulation and healing for the muscles after a workout. Pro athletes and college athletes use this procedure and it has also been shown on TV commercials. The third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson immersed his feet in ice cold water daily to promote stimulation and, in the Scandinavian countries is has been used for centuries.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    In accordance to a medical report in Medical News Today, cryotherapy may offer the following; Decreased headache and reduced pain from migranes. This helps by cooling the nerves in the neck and cooling the blood passing through intracranial vessels.  Moreover, it helps treat nerve disorders by numbing pain. This is helpful to treating athletes with pinched nerves or acrue injuries. In addition, provides pain relief and muscle healing as well as muscle pain and joint disorders as well as arthritis.                                                                                                                                                                                           most of us who are athletic and those with pain  remember our doctors telling us to use ice packs on painful and injured muscles. cryotherapy can promote faster healing and blood circulation. research also has been conducted on the effects of whole body cryotherapy and bone health. The findings showed that whole body immersion had positive  effect on bone resorption, which may suggest that the increased bone formation would be beneficial in the prevention of stress fractures and post fracture recovery.                                                                                                                                                                                 In conclusion, there is evidence that cryotherapy can burn 500 to 800 calories in three minutes, though no serious studies have been done to substantiate this claim. The calorie burning would in all probability be due to heat generation within to body to compensate for the external cold. Shivering increases the body’s metabolism and this is why the calories would be burned. While this is NOT for everyone, it has utilized by many  top athletes who praise it’s worth. At this point, I have not used cryotherapy but have talked to many that have used it after their workouts to a positive view..
